Board and Batten Is Making a Comeback — For Good Reason

The vertical-panel-with-raised-batten look reads as clean, modern, and a little coastal without tipping into gimmick. It works on a full facade, as an accent on a gable end, or as a contrast band around a garage or entry.
But "board and batten" is a look, not a material. You can build it out of vinyl, engineered wood, or fiber cement, and the differences in how each one holds up on a Gulf Coast home are not small. We install this style exclusively in James Hardie fiber cement, and this page walks through why, what the installation actually involves, and what to expect from the product over time.

What Board and Batten Actually Is
The system is simple in concept: wide flat panels (the "boards") are installed vertically, and narrower strips (the "battens") cover the seams between them. The result is a rhythm of shadow lines running up the wall. Done well, it looks intentional and architectural. Done poorly — with warped boards, inconsistent batten spacing, or panels that have already started to cup — it looks cheap fast.
Why the Material Underneath Matters More Than the Look
Because every seam in a board and batten wall is a potential water entry point, and because Sarasota sees wind-driven rain during tropical storms and summer thunderstorms alike, the material has to do two jobs at once: hold its shape over years of heat cycling, and shrug off moisture at every one of those batten joints. That's where cheaper substrates start to show their age.
Why We Don't Build This Look in Vinyl or Engineered Wood
Board and batten is sold in vinyl and in engineered wood (LP SmartSide and similar OSB-based products) at a lower material cost than fiber cement, and we understand why that's tempting. Here's the honest trade-off analysis that led us to standardize on Hardie instead.
Vinyl Board and Batten
Vinyl panels are light, inexpensive, and fast to install, and modern vinyl board and batten profiles have improved in rigidity over older lap siding versions. The problem is thermal movement. Central Florida sun heats a dark-colored vinyl panel well beyond ambient air temperature, and vinyl expands and contracts significantly with that heat. Over enough cycles, panels can bow, and the crisp vertical lines that make board and batten attractive in the first place start to waver. Vinyl also has a lower practical ceiling for direct, sustained hurricane-force wind loading compared to fiber cement, which matters on a style with more seams per square foot than lap siding.
Engineered Wood (OSB-Based) Board and Batten
Engineered wood siding is genuinely easier to cut and hang, and it takes paint well when new. The vulnerability is moisture intrusion at cut edges and seams — exactly where board and batten has the most exposure. Once wood-based substrate takes on water at an exposed edge, it doesn't dry out and recover the way fiber cement does; it swells, and swelling doesn't reverse. On a design with a batten seam every 12 to 24 inches, that's a lot of edges for water to find, especially under the wind-driven rain that comes through Sarasota during our wet season and storm events.
What We're Not Saying
We're not claiming either product fails on every home. Plenty of vinyl and engineered wood board and batten installations are out there performing fine, especially in milder climates or with meticulous maintenance. Our position is narrower: on this coast, with this style's seam density, we don't think the long-term maintenance burden and moisture risk are worth the upfront savings, so we don't install it.
James Hardie Board and Batten: How the System Works
Hardie's board and batten approach uses their fiber cement panel products — primarily HardiePanel vertical siding — installed with dedicated Hardie batten trim over the seams, or in some designs, a reveal-style joint without battens for a more minimal look. Fiber cement is a mix of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, cured into a dense, stable board that does not expand and contract with heat the way vinyl does and does not absorb and swell with moisture the way wood-based products do.
The HZ5 Climate Line
Sarasota County falls in Hardie's HZ5 climate zone, engineered specifically for high-humidity, high-moisture-exposure regions. HZ5 products are formulated for better resistance to moisture-related failure modes in exactly the conditions the Gulf Coast produces year-round — not a marketing distinction, but a different manufacturing spec than the HZ10 line sold in drier climates.
ColorPlus Factory Finish
Most of our board and batten installs use Hardie's ColorPlus finish — a color baked onto the panel at the factory under controlled conditions, rather than field-painted after installation. That matters specifically on this style because factory finish means color consistency across every board and every batten from day one, and touch-up product is available for the rare nick without repainting a whole wall. Field-painted fiber cement is also available and sometimes preferred for custom color matching, but ColorPlus is what most homeowners choose for board and batten because of the finish consistency across so many vertical seams.
Installation Details That Separate a Good Job from a Bad One
Board and batten is less forgiving of installation shortcuts than standard lap siding, because every batten seam is a decision point. This is a style where the installer matters as much as the product.
What Correct Installation Requires
- Proper panel gap and caulk joints at every seam, sized to Hardie's published spec, not "close enough"
- Correct fastener type, spacing, and placement — blind-nailed where possible, with corrosion-resistant fasteners given our salt air exposure
- A drainable house wrap or rainscreen behind the panels so any moisture that does get past a seam has somewhere to go
- Battens fastened independently of the boards beneath, not just nailed through both layers at once
- Flashing at every horizontal transition — window heads, garage returns, roof lines — sized and lapped correctly
- Factory-cut or properly sealed field cuts, since a raw fiber cement edge left unsealed is the one real vulnerability in the product
That last point deserves emphasis. Fiber cement itself is extremely stable, but a cut edge that's never primed or sealed is a weak point on any fiber cement job, board and batten included. It's a five-minute step per cut that some crews skip. We don't.

Board and batten generally costs somewhat more per square foot to install than standard lap siding in the same material, because of the batten trim material and the extra labor time each seam takes. Beyond the base material choice, a few things move the number for a specific home:
- Wall height and number of stories, which affects staging and labor time
- How much of the home gets the board and batten treatment versus using it as an accent on gables or a porch
- Whether existing siding needs full removal, and what condition the sheathing underneath is in once it's exposed

- Trim and flashing complexity around windows, doors, and roof transitions

ColorPlus finishes carry their own separate finish warranty covering fade and chipping. As with any manufacturer warranty, correct installation to Hardie's published specifications is what keeps that warranty intact, which is part of why installation quality isn't a place to cut corners on this particular style.
