Vinyl is inexpensive and easy to install, and in a mild climate it can do fine. In a hurricane-wind, high-UV, salt-air environment, it's a different story. Vinyl can deform or crack under wind-driven debris impact, its color can fade and chalk faster under intense sun, and in high heat it can warp or buckle. It also isn't a great match for a coastal wind zone in terms of impact resistance compared to fiber cement.
Wood-based products — primed spruce, cedar, and engineered wood like LP SmartSide — bring real aesthetic appeal, and LP SmartSide in particular has improved moisture resistance over older wood siding. But wood and wood-derived products are still more vulnerable to moisture absorption, swelling, and rot than fiber cement, and in a humid, rain-heavy, storm-prone county, that maintenance burden compounds fast. Cedar and primed spruce require more diligent, more frequent maintenance to keep moisture out — repainting, resealing, and watching for soft spots — and a missed maintenance cycle in this climate can turn into a costly repair.
Other fiber cement brands, like Cemplank and Allura, are legitimate fiber cement products and share some of the core advantages of the category. Our decision to standardize on James Hardie specifically comes down to their ColorPlus factory-applied finish (which is baked on and warrantied against fading in a way field-applied paint isn't), their HZ5 product line engineered specifically for high-humidity, hurricane-prone climates like ours, and a transferable warranty structure we've found to be strong and well-supported.
